Sutherland Shire is a dynamic local government area situated in the southern region of Sydney, New South Wales. Spanning approximately 370 square kilometers (142.9 square miles), it is positioned about 26 kilometers (16 miles) south-southwest of Sydney's central business district. The area had an estimated population of 218,464 according to the 2016 census, with an increase to approximately 229,213 by 2018.

Colloquially referred to as "The Shire," Sutherland Shire is bordered by several local government areas, including Bayside, Canterbury-Bankstown, Wollongong, Liverpool, Georges River, and Campbelltown. The administrative heart of the Shire is located in the suburb of Sutherland, where the council chambers can be found on Eton Street. As of January 10, 2022, Carmelo Pesce, a member of the Liberal Party, serves as the mayor.

This region holds historical significance as it was the first landing site of Lieutenant James Cook, who set foot on what is now known as Kurnell on April 29, 1770. Initially, Sutherland Shire was considered as a potential site for the first British settlement before the decision was made to establish the colony at Sydney Cove.

In addition to its historical roots, Sutherland Shire is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including beaches, parks, and bushland, making it a popular destination for both residents and visitors. The area has also gained notoriety through various reality television shows, highlighting its vibrant community and lifestyle. With a growing population and a diverse array of amenities, Sutherland Shire continues to be a prominent feature in the Sydney metropolitan landscape.
